The Social Tariff is one of the government benefits that has existed since 2010. This service aims to improve the quality of life of low-income people. That's because thousands of families receive a discount on their electricity bills through the Social Tariff. Despite having existed for more than 10 years, many people still do not know about the benefit or do not know how to apply for it.

Today Brazil has several aids to improve people's lives and thus combat inequality in the country. One of the most famous benefits in the last 20 years was Bolsa Família, which in 2021 was replaced by Auxílio Brasil. In the energy field, in addition to the Social Tariff program, needy families can also count on Gas Aid, and Gasoline Aid is in progress.

But to be entitled to the Social Tariff, the family must meet certain criteria, which occurs in almost all government programs. Those who still don't have the benefit are dealing with the price hikes that have been happening in recent months. Therefore, this article aims to clarify doubts about the Social Tariff, as well as to show how to request this feature.

Why is electricity so expensive?

Before explaining how to register for the Social Tariff program, it is worth explaining to the reader the reason for the increases in electricity in recent months. According to the IBGE, the value of electricity grew three times more than inflation. To arrive at this number, IBGE took into account the IPCA-15.

The main reason for this increase is the water crisis, as Brazilian plants need rainwater to operate at maximum capacity. But as the rains in recent years were lower than expected, there was a negative impact on the country's electricity production. Today in Brazil, to calculate the value of the energy bill, companies use a system of flags that charge the value of the kWh according to consumption.

Until 2021 there were the Green, Yellow, and Red flags, but ANEEL announced the Water Shortage Flag, which took many people by surprise. With this new banner, consumers began to pay an even more expensive fee for their electricity consumption. At this point, it is worth mentioning that the current water crisis is the biggest in the last 90 years.

Social Rate – What is it and who can subscribe

Undoubtedly, the people who most suffer the impacts of increases in electricity are low-income families. This is because many of them survive on less than the minimum wage and often receive only some social assistance from the government. Faced with this situation, in 2010 the Social Tariff program emerged, which only happens due to a partnership between the electric companies and the federal government.

In summary, the benefit works as an allowance that can vary from 65% to 100% according to the profile of the person receiving it. Furthermore, it is very important to say that unlike other government benefits, this is not paid in cash, but in the form of a discount on the energy bill. In this way, the transfer of the discount value is made directly to the energy company of each state.

Thanks to the Tarifa Social program, many families can count on more comfort and use some electronic device, such as, for example, fans or a refrigerator. But to have the cheapest light bill you need to meet some requirements. Firstly, the benefit includes families with an income of up to half a minimum wage, who have an active registration with Cadúnico.

The Social Tariff program also extends to families that have a person with a chronic illness and therefore use an electronic device. These families, however, must present a medical report that justifies enrollment in the program. In addition, this program also serves quilombola and indigenous communities. Finally, people who receive the BPC can also participate.

Social Rate – How to request the benefit in the CadÚnico app

Since the beginning of 2022, the government has been sharing data from the Cadastro Único with energy companies in each state or region. In this way, many families began to receive the allowance automatically, as long as they were able to participate.

However, as sharing is new, it may happen that some people do not receive the benefit. In this case, the person representing the family must go to an agency in their city to validate the registration.

Those who do not yet participate in the Single Registry may be missing out on some benefit, such as the Social Tariff. But the good news is that this registration can happen via cell phone. The CadÚnico app is available on Google Play and the App Store. After downloading, the person must enter their details.

If the person wants to participate in the Tarifa Social program, they can register online and schedule a time to go to the nearest branch to validate the data. It is essential to use the CadÚnico app for joining the program to be more agile and more practical.
